Art and Design

Art and Design at Portsdown Primary

School and Early Years

At Portsdown, we aim to encourage and inspire children to become creative and skilful artists. A high-quality art and design education should engage and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Through exploring and experimenting, children will learn how to control different media, so that they are able to produce creative work and record their experiences.

The progression of skills we have in place, ensures the children will become proficient in four key areas:

  • Drawing

  • Painting

  • 3D art

  • Printmaking

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. In each art topic, they will research a particular artist or art movement, in order to understand how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to culture.

Welcome to Portsdown's Art Gallery!

Year 4 - Year 4 are learning about David Hockney! Here you can see them practicing their colour-mixing skills. Can you see how they have also created different tones?

Year 5 - Our artists in Year 5 completed an incredible still life drawing unit where they were lucky enough to have a visit from a local artist Samm Mackinnon!

Year 6 - Year 6 started the year with a sketching unit on Tudor portraits! We have recently been inspired by Monet to create our own water colour landscapes!
